Sun. May 14

We arrived in Jackson, MO just past noon on Fri. and met with Scott and Marlene at the Elks Lodge.

We were able to drop the trailer and have it hooked to electric through our stay. We then followed them back to their house and spent the afternoon catching up, since it had been a while since we had seen each other. Marlene fixed dinner, chicken, pasta salad and apple pie. We had a great evening of conversation and laughter.
Sat. we woke to coffee and coffee cake before heading into Cape Girardeau. We were too late for the farmer's market, but in time for the flea market along the wall that protects the city from the Mississippi River when it is full.
When the river is high, approaching flood stage this is what the other side of the wall looks like.

Without the wall the first few blocks of the city would be under water.

Back to the house for a nice evening and a shrimp creole dinner. The weatherman has been nice to us since we have been here and only dropped a few drops of rain. Tomorrow is departure day as we begin the westward portion towards home. Thinking about a lazy departure but will check the weather and decide in the AM.

Sunday morning and up early as is normal. Weather appears to be nasty and a storm is coming east as we go west right into it. The target was Topeka, KS but we are departing earlier than originally planned so we can try to drive through the storm.
Lo and behold the weather guesser's are wrong and we don't get a drop of rain on us all the way to Topeka and beyond. Reached that point early enough to continue on to near Abilene, KS and Walt's Four Seasons Campground. They have a very nice facility and country store. They also make a nice pizza. Shortly after getting setup the storm finally did arrive and it came down hard for a bit. Expecting more later and in the morning but hope for a dry 15 minutes so we can get underway early and continue west. Next stop Golden, CO.
